From Headmaster

Dear Parents,

This week you should read this newsletter aloud to your friends! That is because on Thursday it was 'World Read Aloud Day'. A small reading café was set up in the school dining hall and both adults and children enjoyed the stories. We are never too old to have stories read to us and it certainly sharpens our listening skills. Thank you to our librarians, Ms. Claire Elliott, Ms. Donica Dhamelia and the English department for promoting this.

Another special day took place this week, celebrated by our Early Years teachers and children, known as '100 Day'. Wednesday was apparently the 100th working day in the school year, not that anyone is counting down. There were several '100 themed' activities, including a number hunt around the school, finger painting and cape making. Next year, Mr. Mumford has promised to give 100RMB to charity for every child who can recite 100 words of poetry by heart, so we look forward to that.

In next week's newsletter, you will hear about the exciting 'Wellbeing Day'– too late for inclusion in this letter but the plans look wonderful. You will also hear about ACAMIS basketball, which is taking place from Thursday 1st – Saturday 3rd February and which promises to be a first-rate tournament.

This week, DCB hosted the annual Admissions, Marketing & Communication conference with over forty AMC specialists from the Dulwich network of schools, including Jane Scott, Director of Communications from Dulwich College in London.  The group shared best practice, discussed changes in the markets, and ongoing improvements in the College-wide communications and admissions platforms. For many of the guests, it was their first visit to Beijing and they were very complimentary about DCB's welcoming students and staff, beautiful artwork on displays and our facilities. Thank you to our AMC team for hosting the event and the Operations and ICT teams for their logistics support.

Last Sunday, the students in our Junior School Honours Choir made us proud, thanks to their performances at the 'Egg' (National Centre for the Performing Arts). These singers, together with several boys from the Year 7 Male Voice Choir, took part in a performance of Johan de Meij's Symphony Number 4, alongside the Dunshan Wind Orchestra, conducted by Adrian Schneider. The choir sang in German and the children were not daunted by performing in such a prestigious venue. Thank you to Ms. Haynes and the music department for preparing the students so well.

On Wednesday, we enjoyed a student led Key Stage 3 assembly on 'Health'. This was an entertaining and informative way to hear about nutrition, sport and psychology in the health mix described by the Year 8 students. I dusted off my skipping rope and joined in the fun, without injuring myself in the process!

At the same time as the Key Stage 3 assembly, our Year 12s and 13s were privileged to listen to Mr. David Aikman, DCB parent and trustee, describe the intricacies of the Davos World Economic Forum. Mr. Aikman is responsible for the organisation of the Davos conference each year and his insights were extremely well received by our students, who asked incisive questions.

I am currently in Shanghai for the Dulwich College International Steering Group meeting, which is a chance for all Headmasters/mistresses and functional directors of the group to discuss strategy, challenges and successes. It has been a pleasure to represent DCB and I look forward to seeing our students perform on Friday and Saturday at the International Schools Choral Music Society concerts.

I hope you have an enjoyable weekend.

Kind regards,
