From Headmaster

Dear Parents,

Lovely to be back in DCB after a fruitful trip to London. The recruitment event was busy and I can now confirm that more superb teachers will be coming our way in August. It was a pleasure to talk to so many candidates about the DCB community, our ethos and aims. I would like to thank our HR department for their work in following up so swiftly in their communication with these new recruits. I spent a pleasant evening at the BIS Awards ceremony in London, and our heartfelt congratulations go to our sister school Dulwich College Seoul, for their BIS award for Innovation in Teaching.

On Thursday and Friday this week, we held the inaugural Dulwich 'Tech Expo'. Teams of 9-11 year old students, from seven Dulwich Colleges, collaborated in fun competitions linking to entrepreneurship and real world STEAM challenges. It was the perfect occasion for the official opening of our wonderful SE21 space by Dulwich College International Chairman, Mr. Fraser White. We are grateful to Mr. White for his original idea and wholehearted support for the SE21 project, and for sharing his vision with our students and guests. We were joined by architects, journalists from the Financial Times and People's Daily and by teachers and students from the other Dulwich Colleges, including Mr. James Humphrey from Dulwich College in London.

Our keynote speaker for the Expo was Mr. Dominic Johnson-Hill, the CEO and founder of 'Plastered 8'. What a creative mind! He inspired the students with amusing anecdotes of challenges and highlights from his career in Beijing. Plastered 8 employs artists whose work appears on T-shirts and murals in restaurants and cafés throughout the city.

Ms. Natalie Stevens was the driving force behind the Tech Expo and I am also grateful to Pierce Zhao, Danny Helliwell and Sophie Hidden, along with our events, admin and operations teams for their work in ensuring the smooth running of the event. It was a fine example of collaboration and we really hope that the boys and girls enjoyed making new friends whilst challenging themselves and developing their creativity!

In terms of entrepreneurship in action, some of our older students have excelled themselves recently, holding the China Young Entrepreneurs Association 'Business Start Up Competition' at the Penn Wharton China Centre last weekend. Well done to Junha Y and his team.

Finally, courage has also been displayed on our ice rink this week, as Junior School students have enjoyed their skating, or in some cases slipping and sliding. Thank you to Mr. Burns for organising this.

Have a very good weekend.

Simon Herbert

CNY Hongbao for Support Staff (on behalf of Friends of Dulwich)

As a DCB tradition, our parent organisation, Friends of Dulwich, organises a distribution of Hongbao (red envelopes) for our support staff each year, to express gratitude to ayis, security guards, maintenance workers, gardeners, bus drivers, and bus monitors for their hard work and wonderful service to the school.
Donation boxes have been placed at the Receptions, Student Service Center, Coffee & Books and with the campus administrators of each school. Students, parents, teachers and staff are all welcome to make donations. If you are willing to donate, please drop cash in any of the donation boxes by Wednesday, 31 January. Early Years and Junior School parents were also given the option of handing in donations to their class teachers.
Please be aware that this donation will be as an addition to the Hongbao made by DCB to every individual Chinese member of support staff; not only those on contract but also the sub-contracted areas such as ayis, guards, maintenance teams, gardeners, bus monitors, and drivers.
Representatives from Friends of Dulwich will pool the cash from the donations and then prepare and distribute a Hongbao to each of our 245 support staff before the Chinese New Year break.
On behalf of Friends, we appreciate your support and generosity in advance!

Friends of Dulwich are currently looking for parent volunteers to take up the following roles:
