Friday 8 December 2017 Dulwich Newsletter

From Headmaster

Dear Parents,

We have definitely entered the festive season, although at least DCB waited until the month of December for the parties and celebrations to begin (I had to leave a well-known coffee shop in Pinnacle Plaza in early November as they played the same Christmas songs on a loop).

On Friday evening, the BritCham Christmas party took place in the Rosewood Hotel. DCB sponsored this and it was a great success, with a celebration of the close links between British and Chinese business. We enjoyed a chat with the British Ambassador, Dame Barbara Woodward. The DCB Chamber Choir, conducted by Mr. Paul West, did us proud.

The DCB staff enjoyed themselves on Saturday, thanks to Mr. Stratford and the Social Committee, at the staff Christmas party. This year the party was held at the Fairmont Hotel and we were entertained by the best staff band in Asia!

The Year 1 and 2 children were very active this week in the annual Teddy Bear Gym event. Our thanks to Mr. Sion Parry and his team, who were ably assisted by the Year 8 and 9 Senior School students. Our guest Teddy this year found the outfit a little restrictive (see below) but did a great job! The children have also enjoyed their Winter Celebrations at both RMC and LG campuses. Their teachers worked tirelessly to organise both fun events and parents created some stunning decorations.

Our musicians are not the only students to have been out and about this week. Four Year 11 artists, led by Mr. Stewart, were invited to attend the British Council leadership seminar and present their experiences of project based learning in art and design. The Chinese Headteachers who came to DCB in November were so impressed by our artists and their portfolios, that the British Council decided to invite them to this prestigious leadership event. Well done to Jenny W, Jenny Z, Justin K and Sarah S.

Just when you wait for a Dulwich Christmas celebration to take place, two come along! Yes, this week we enjoyed some joyous and festive entertainment from our musicians and choirs. The Music Department deserves huge praise for pulling off not one, but two, hugely entertaining concerts which were both a sell-out. We congratulate all students and teachers involved on the stage and also everyone else who worked so hard behind the scenes to make this a magical week for the audiences. Guests at the concerts also enjoyed the Christmas Bazaar which preceded the music and we thank our Events Department for their excellent organisation and our Friends of Dulwich parent volunteers for serving beverages on both days.

Have a good weekend and final week of term,

Simon Herbert
