Friday 1 December 2017 Dulwich Newsletter

From Headmaster

Dear Parents,

My thanks to Mr. Hurworth and all the coaches on the Phuket football trip. Our Varsity Girls finished a highly respectable third and the Varsity Boys fourth. The U11 Boys, U13 Girls and U15 Boys reached the quarter finals and all other teams tried very hard within the Plate Competitions. Importantly, our teachers were very impressed by the team spirit, good manners and respect on display from the DCB players throughout the trip.

To continue the sporting theme, we are celebrating some basketball successes. For the first time, our Varsity and Junior Varsity Boys' Teams have gone undefeated against both WAB and ISB. Two wins out of two for both our teams. On top of this, the Boys' Junior Varsity Team won the 'Winter Blast' tournament, hosted by WAB last weekend, triumphing over Harrow, WAB and ISB. The JV Girls came second in their tournament, despite some key absentees participating in the Great Wall Shootout. Next year our coaches intend to schedule even more games against Chinese public schools to stretch our most able players, as clearly this strategy is paying off.

I enjoyed a visit to a Key Stage 3 Assembly this week. This was led by our Year 7 students, who kept the pace moving and introduced the theme of wellbeing and social growth. They showed strong public speaking skills to an audience of peers and older year groups, who were attentive throughout.

Our musicians have been busy as usual. As you know, our students are often called upon to perform at major Beijing events. Last weekend they appeared at the Scottish Ball, which was a wonderful Celtic celebration, even including a ceilidh (special Scottish dances, for those unfamiliar!). Well done to Mr. Jarvis for dynamic conducting and the Big Band and Ms. Dodington for such an entertaining performance.

On Wednesday, our musicians played at the Save the Children gala fundraiser at the new Bulgari Hotel. They played beautifully, conducted faultlessly by Ms. Chou, and were commended by the compères. It was a pleasure to be invited by the Head of China for Save the Children, Mr. Wang Chao. This organisation, founded in 1919 in London, has now helped over one million Chinese children and in 2017 became one of the first non-governmental organisations registered under the new International NGO law. The event attracted some well known Chinese stars, including former Dulwich parent Ning Jing, pictured below (permission granted for all photos) with Hodan Gamar, lecturer in African Studies in Beijing and London.

Finally, we are delighted to announce that two of our students gained first and second place in this year's Beijing Young Musician of the Year Competition. Ben K played Liszt's La Campanella to gain first prize, closely followed by Max Z who played Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 1.

Kind regards and have a good weekend,

Simon Herbert
