From Headmaster

Dear Parents,

Our Year 5 students enthralled the audience in the Wodehouse Theatre on Thursday evening with their performance of 'Out of this World', which was a lively space-age take on themes of friendship and sustainability. Well done to all involved and thank you to the Year 5 leader Ms. Turnbull and her team of directors.

I would like to commend Ms. Grace Gong, Head of Senior School Chinese, for her organisation of the Chinese first language conference for teachers last Sunday. Over 140 teachers from Beijing and our DCI sister schools in Suzhou and Shanghai enjoyed professional development and specialist training from four key speakers, including DCB parent Terry Yu. The themes covered were: the use of drama skills in Chinese first language; debating and games within lessons; how to guide students to read books; high level questioning and fun techniques for writing. It was a pleasure to see so many committed teachers giving up their Sunday to improve their practice and work with colleagues. Our thanks to Ms. Gong, Mr. Yu and all those involved.

On a sporting note, our football superstars, boys and girls, from U11 through to U19, are all now in Phuket for the 7s competition. Over 100 DCB representatives have travelled and we wish Mr. Hurworth, all our coaches, players and supporters the very best for a successful and enjoyable tournament.

This week's visitors to DCB have included Ms. Lesley Meyer, a newly appointed Head in the Dulwich International Group, Ms. Kate Beith, Deputy Director of Schools, Mr. Mark Brotherton, Director of the International Association of Prep Schools. My thanks to all students who have conducted tours for our visitors and all staff who have given up time to discuss educational themes.

Finally, as many of you know, our wonderful Head of Junior School, Ms. Grant, will retire this year after many years of excellent service to the College - there will be more on that later in the school year. In the meantime, I am delighted to announce that Mr. Daniel Nichol will become Head of our Junior School from August 2018. Mr. Nichol went through a rigorous selection process, including a first interview in London and series of panels, tasks and presentations across two days last week. We offer Mr. Nichol our warmest congratulations.

I look forward to seeing you at one of the two dates for a 'Dulwich Christmas'. I know that tickets have almost sold out so you had better move fast!

Kind regards and have a good weekend,

Simon Herbert
