From Headmaster

Dear Parents,

It has been another wonderful week for visitors to DCB, not only prospective families but also guests who are enhancing our curriculum and our professional learning.

Andy Hind, who is a former UK Head and now international keynote speaker specialising in leadership themes, has been working with leaders from all three schools this week. The feedback has been excellent and we look forward to seeing our teams flourish with new ideas.

University of Auckland dance students have been with us, inspiring our students and audiences through the power of dance. They prepared and delivered dance workshops to Drama and Music classes. A focus group of Junior and Senior School dancers were helped to choreograph a performance that was part of a spectacular show on Tuesday evening.

We are grateful to Mr. Kaye, Ms. Turnbull, Ms. Holland and DCB parent Mr. Hamilton for managing to engage an excellent speaker for our Year 5s and Senior School students. Professor Ojha, OBE, visited back in June last year and gave a lecture about his work with Tim Peake and the team that sent him to the International Space Station. To have a space industry expert with us was a thrill and the Year 5s were on the edge of their seats. Professor Ojha talked to the Senior School students about the benefits of a science degree and critical thinking, and the current trends in society towards information overload. He spoke to both groups about the value of resilience in the workplace.

The KS4 STEM class is currently taking part in the 'Tycoon in Schools' competition. They have been challenged to set up and run their own business for six weeks using a small start up loan. They are all now at the point where they are ready to sell their products, starting today in the main atrium. All the money raised will support the students' major projects. If they are successful, the prize for the 'Tycoon in Schools' competition is £1000 and a prize-giving ceremony at Buckingham Palace with Peter Jones and Prince Andrew. We hope parents and friends will purchase some useful and interesting Christmas gifts!

Kind regards and have a good weekend,

Simon Herbert

'Keeping precious memories with Tussot App - it is very easy' with DCB Parent, Soo Shung Foo

From Soo, mom of 3 children, from Malaysia:

There is one thing  that has been bothering me and my husband for few years. Since the birth of a smart phone, we have been taking many photos. When we see something nice, we quickly snap photos before even having a chance for our soul and mind to enjoy, digest and make meaning out of it. Recalling those old days where there were no camera phone, we spent money to develop hard copy photos and the entire family and friends would be  flipping through the photos and talking about it. What about now ? How do you handle thousands of your photos ? Some got deleted. Many were saved in hard disk or free/paid cloud computing space. Imagine when you are 70 years old and want to revisit those memorable moments or events. Where do you start? Retrieve from hard disk and cloud space ? Will you remember the sequence, the stories and the feeling at that moment when photo was taken? Thus, we gathered a team of people  with diverse  expertise to build our own Tussot App. Though not perfect, it has been addressing our photos management problems ever since. Many of our friends and relatives  really enjoy  it and I would love to share it further with other parents in the Dulwich community!
