Language learning is an important part of our learning philosophy at Dulwich. We believe that learning a language is essential for understanding the world as well as understanding oneself, and for appreciating the subtleties of cultural differences. As the Chinese saying "学一门语言，就是多一个观察世界的窗户" which means "To learn a language is to have more than one window from which to look at the world".
Dulwich College International schools have developed a strong Mandarin programme. At Dulwich College Beijing Mandarin is taught as a native language, second language and foreign language. Throughout the College, Mandarin is taught daily and is streamed according to ability, from native speaker to absolute beginner. Student learning goes beyond speaking, listening, reading and writing to involve workshops and activities that immerse students in the richness of the Chinese culture.
In addition to our Mandarin programme, Senior School students can choose to learn German, French or Spanish. Budding linguists can continue to study their chosen languages as part of their IGCSE and IB course.
Our students come from a wide range of linguistic and cultural backgrounds, with over 45 different nationalities represented in our diverse student body. We are able to support a percentage of students who are non-native English speakers. Students who require additional English language teaching to access the curriculum are provided with English as an Additional Language (EAL) support. Working closely with the class and subject teachers, our language specialists help students develop the skills necessary to complete their school work in English and benefit fully from all the College has to offer.
We also support native language learning through our co-curricular activities according to the needs of our families.
