From Headmaster

Dear Parents,

This week has been wonderfully busy and positive.

You will have noticed the Roundabout book sale in the main atrium. We thank all the willing parent volunteers who put in time to make this a success. Our friends at Roundabout do a tremendous job for those in need and we are happy to host this sale each year.

One of our College aims, 'from Local to Global', has been in evidence this week. We have collaborated with around 50 Chinese Headmasters and Headmistresses as part of the British Council Training Programme. They have visited DCB for three days to discover more about our student leadership, staff recruitment and retention, holistic education and global mindedness. It has been a pleasure to meet with them and share our thoughts. We in turn look forward to visiting some of their schools to gain more insight into their context and challenges. I would like to thank all staff within DCB who presented to our guests, and in particular our Head of Government Relations, Ms. Xiaoxiao Qin, and her assistant, Ms. Crystal Yang, for their hard work.

We also made new contacts through the medium of sport. Our staff basketball team, ably led by coach Judson Tomlin and captain Jordan Burns, played some friendly yet competitive matches against ISB and Kong Gang Airport District officials. The DCB team included a range of talent and ages. The event was hosted in the DCB sports centre by the Foreign Affairs Bureau and Airport Sub-District Office (Kong Gang). Several senior officials from the Airport Sub-district were present and speeches were made before the matches. The Kong Gang team contained several police officers but fortunately there were no arrests, despite a 'tip off' or two (good luck to our translators with that one). Well done to the DCB staff who did us proud, beating ISB and Kong Gang and now representing Shunyi District at the 3rd Beijing Expats Basketball Tournament.

We work closely with other Beijing schools, so it was a pleasure for me to spend an evening with other Beijing international school principals on Wednesday night. It was a chance to connect with acquaintances and also to meet the Heads who are new to Beijing (BSB, ISB, Peking Affiliate School and the new WAB Principal for August 2018).

Also this week, we were honoured to welcome Sir John Holman, Director of the Royal Society of Chemistry, to our College. He was accompanied by Dr. Amy Lam, General Manager of the RSC in China and Professor David Evans, from the Beijing University of Chemical Technology. Dr. Schamp, our Head of Chemistry, deserves our thanks for engaging such esteemed guests.

This week has also seen some magnificent entertainment. On Wednesday and Thursday evening, audiences were treated to a fine performance of Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. This amusing and complex tale of a play within a play was portrayed with humour and prowess by a cast of all ages within the Senior School. Our huge congratulations go to all the cast and of course to the Co-Directors, Mr. Randall and Mr. Greene.

Our Early Years parents also enthralled us this week with their own acting talent, with their Spider and Pumpkins shows. The children were thoroughly entertained and all the preparations were worth it – well done to Directors Joanna May (Legend Garden), Barbara Tsui and Kim Young Joo (Riviera).

We consider our Dulwich community one big family, and this was reinforced by a wonderful Halloween party for staff children on Sunday afternoon. Many DCB staff and their children gathered in Room 308 to celebrate, wearing some amazing ghoulish costumes. There was delicious food, art activities, a bouncy castle, scavenger hunt, dancing, balloon modelling and a magic show. The children had a marvellous time, and it was a lovely occasion to bring together our families who support the school so well. My thanks go to Helen Herbert, Joe Stewart, Maggie Jiang, StuCo, Year 12 helpers, the Music Interns, Jason Lin and Operations for their hard work, creativity and organisation.

Finally, to finish on a sporting note, we say congratulations to our Varsity Volleyball Teams who played so well in the ACAMIS tournaments at Dulwich College Shanghai last weekend. Coaches Mr. Newman and Ms. Tomaszun were delighted to see such strong performances. The girls gained Bronze and the boys managed to win outright, defeating DCS in the semis and cruising through the final to gain Gold.

Kind regards and have a good weekend,

Simon Herbert

Thank you to all  Roundabout volunteers and supporters!

DCB hosted the annual Roundabout Charity Book Fair on 28th, 30th and 31st October Fair to support Roundabout.

We thank all the willing parent, student and staff volunteers who put in time to make this a success! Special thanks to our Friends of Dulwich for their Mobile Coffee stand on Saturday and to all excited shoppers!

In three days, we raised  a total of 58,452.57 RMB!

50,000RMB will be donated to Bunina Primary School in Zimbabwe to complete building of their new classroom block. The remaining amount will help a sick baby Alex, whose mom is also from Zimbabwe.

24 DCB students visited the Bunina Primary School in July 2017. Whilst there, they found a heartwarming desire to learn from the students, an incredible dedication from teachers who regularly go unpaid for a number of months each year, and a woeful lack of both facilities and space. It is wonderful to work together with the Beijing and Roundabout community to support  this cause!

Our friends at Roundabout do a tremendous job for those in need and we are happy to host this sale each year.

Call for Parent Vendors for the Dulwich Christmas Bazaar!

Before you realize, the great Dulwich Christmas is only a month away! Mark your calendar for 5th & 6th of December. Back with overwhelming demand for the concert tickets and the ever growing Junior Choir, we've decided to host 2 days of Christmas Concert this year, 5th for Senior School and 6th for Early Years and Junior School. Meanwhile, the paired Christmas Bazaar will also run for both days. If you're interested in renting a booth at the bazaar, please contact Ashley Wu through email with your phone contact by Friday 3rd November. We'll send you registration form for renting the booth. You may be asked to present samples of your products for sale. Booth will be allocated at the discretion of the event organizer on a first-come-first-served basis.
