From Headmaster

Dear Parents,

I would like to thank Ruth Grant and all the teachers, parents and students involved in this week's safeguarding audit, led by international child protection expert, Mr. Tim Gerrish. We place the security of our children at the highest level and shall always work to achieve the safest environment for our students. Mr. Gerrish was impressed by the care and attention to this subject already in place at DCB and has given excellent advice to strengthen our processes. We shall continue to work with Mr. Gerrish in the future.

There have been several student highlights since last week. Our Junior School athletes won the U9 indoor competition against BSB and Harrow convincingly and we thank our sports staff for their excellent coaching. Meanwhile, Matthew C and Alessandro V from Key Stage 5 headed to Dulwich College Shanghai and grabbed first place in the 'Hackathon'. Students worked throughout Friday, Saturday and Sunday to come up with a concept or product aimed at 'improving everyday life'. They had to present their ideas and complete a working prototype. Alessandro and Matthew, working with two students from Shanghai United International School, were voted judges' favourite for their proposed wireless data storage system to be worn on one's glasses.

Debating is another skill promoted heavily at DCB and we are pleased that so many students are involved. Between Thursday and Saturday last week, Genesis Debate Programme visited from London, providing intensive workshops and competition. The final on Saturday afternoon in the Wodehouse Theatre was won by Luke W, Alice F, Emily B, Aiden S and Rudy Y, all KS3 students. They were coached by James Waterfield, who is currently studying Politics, Philosophy and Economics at the University of Manchester. Mr. Waterfield has represented the Manchester Debating Union at the European Debating championships and has taught debating around the world. Well done all and thank you to Ms. Sharp for the organisation.

On Monday night we were treated to some wonderful music from our finest Senior School musicians. Congratulations to winners Zong Xu S, Ben K and all these talented musicians who played a range of pieces, from Mozart to Herbie Hancock, as part of the Young Musician of the Year Competition. Please read more in Mr. Hawkins' Senior School newsletter.

Finally, our aim to collaborate and 'Build Bridges to the World' has been taken to new heights by our Head of Government Relations, Ms. Xiaoxiao Qin. Not only was Ms. Qin a member of the France-China Foundation delegation to France in 2013, she was last week invited to the Elysée Palace in Paris, where she met with President Emmanuel Macron. Created in 2012 by diplomats, entrepreneurs and artists, the Foundation promotes greater understanding and cooperation between French and Chinese decision-makers through a direct and lasting relationship. We are very proud of Ms. Qin, who is a living example of the importance of cultural exchange. She assures us that Monsieur Macron is also invited back to DCB! Nos félicitations, Ms. Qin (third on the right of the President).

Call for Parent Vendors for the Dulwich Christmas Bazaar!

Before you realize, the great Dulwich Christmas is only a month away! Mark your calendar for 5th & 6th of December. Back with overwhelming demand for the concert tickets and the ever growing Junior Choir, we've decided to host 2 days of Christmas Concert this year, 5th for Senior School and 6th for Early Years and Junior School. Meanwhile, the paired Christmas Bazaar will also run for both days. This year we would like to offer DCB parents first priorities in renting the booth to help you promote your own business or the business of your recommended vendors.

If you're interested in renting a booth at the bazaar, please contact Ashley Wu through email ashley.wu@dulwich-beijing.cn with your phone contact by Friday 3rd November. We'll send you registration form for renting the booth. You may be asked to present samples of your products for sale. Booth will be allocated at the discretion of the event organizer on a first-come-first-served basis. We'll start to contact external vendors after the above deadline.

Roundabout Charity Book Fair looking for Volunteers!

Roundabout will be back in DCB this October with their annual amazing Charity Book Fair.  You can expect thousand of gently used, donated books for sale. Many languages and genres. Paperbacks and children's books from 10 RMB. Hardbacks from 20 RMB!

In preparations for this event, we are looking for  parent and staff volunteers who can help with logistics. See the details below. Parents will be also able to help by supporting Friends Mobile Coffee or bringing homemade cakes for sale on Saturday.

Roundabout is a social enterprise headed by volunteers. Started in 2008, they were the first charity store in mainland China. They now give support to 48 charitable organizations in the Beijing area and many more throughout China, Inner Mongolia and Mongolia. To learn more about Roundabout please read www.roundaboutchina.com

All proceeds from this year's Roundabout Charity Book Fair will help Bunina Primary School in  Zimbabwe to complete  building of their new classroom block.  24 DCB students visited the school in July 2017. Whilst there, they found a heartwarming desire to learn from the students, an incredible dedication from teachers who regularly go unpaid for a number of months each year, and a woeful lack of both facilities and space. It is wonderful to work together with the Beijing and Roundabout community to support  this cause!
