Friday 13 October 2017 Dulwich Newsletter

From Headmaster

Dear Parents,

I knew this was going to be a fun week at DCB when a donkey walked past my office. It turned out to be a boy with a donkey head on, as part of the preparations for the forthcoming school production 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. The actor in question, Kevin Yao, will play the role of 'Bottom' of course and seemed quite relaxed in his costume. We wish all the cast well with the rehearsals and look forward to seeing the play on November 1st and 2nd.

The Wodehouse Theatre has seen some action this week. Firstly, we were privileged to welcome Mr Erden Eruç, 15 times Guinness World Record holder for his ocean rowing feats and totally human-powered, five year circumnavigation of the world (rowing and cycling). We always try to bring engaging speakers to Dulwich to inspire our students and this did not disappoint. Erden spoke to parents in Coffee and Books and then to Years 10-13 and finally Years 7-9. His message included goal setting, finding the courage to take the first steps towards one's goal, the importance of exercise and the power of resilience. This presentation was a fitting choice for the Shackleton lecture this year and we thank Edgar Zillmann from DCI for finding such an engaging, successful and yet humble man as Erden.

The Wodehouse was also the venue for a visit from four high-powered US universities this week: the University of Chicago, Vanderbilt, Cornell and Rice. All the visitors did a wonderful job and made their institutions sound very appealing. Our students and parents enjoyed the insights and we thank Mrs. Pankratz and her team for providing this opportunity. On the university theme, I enjoyed a trip downtown on Tuesday evening with Mrs. Pankratz and Ms. Deeds to the Yale Center of Beijing to hear the Senior Admissions Tutor, John Yi, talk about his alma mater and how to gain entry into this institution. This was entertaining, informative and included comments such as, 'If your test score is the most interesting item on your application, you are not interesting to Yale'. Fair enough - fortunately, students at DCB are aware of this and are encouraged to pursue their passions and interests for their own sake, not only to gain entry to university. Mr. Yi also conveyed how Yale prefers its applicants not to work with agents, who often provide 'template' essays and variable advice.

It was a pleasure to present to parents at the Headmaster's Forum on Thursday. We looked at routes to success, College updates, and developments and challenges for DCB. I shall give the talk again for Riviera parents on Thursday 2nd November.

Also on Thursday we wished the Junior School football teams well as they headed to Suzhou. Good luck to the players and coaches who have prepared tremendously well.

Early Years students and those left in the Junior School are 'in the pink' on Friday as we celebrate Pink Day in aid of Breast Cancer Research. DCB does so much for charity and this year we are collating our efforts, through working with Friends and the Dulwich International Schools Foundation, to achieve an even more coherent plan, which will provide greater benefit to our worthy causes.

Finally, it was an honour to welcome Mr. Tom Ulmet, Executive Director of ACAMIS, to Dulwich today. The Head of Senior School Chinese, Grace Gong, is organising the Chinese teaching conference on behalf of ACAMIS in June 2018, and Mr. Ulmet was here to plan with Grace and to check out the venue, which he described as superb. We are very excited to be collaborating and grateful to Grace for her hard work.

Kind regards and have a good weekend,

Simon Herbert

Roundabout Charity Book Fair looking for Volunteers!

Roundabout will be back in DCB this October with their annual amazing Charity Book Fair.  You can expect thousand of gently used, donated books for sale. Many languages and genres. Paperbacks and children's books from 10 RMB. Hardbacks from 20 RMB!

In preparations for this event, we are looking for  parent and staff volunteers who can help with logistics. See the details below. Parents will be also able to help by supporting Friends Mobile Coffee or bringing homemade cakes for sale on Saturday.

DCB will be  hosting an annual Book Drive after the holidays to support Roundabout, so use the October break  to browse  through your own libraries and think about some book donations!

Roundabout is a social enterprise headed by volunteers. Started in 2008, they were the first charity store in mainland China. They now give support to 48 charitable organizations in the Beijing area and many more throughout China, Inner Mongolia and Mongolia. To learn more about Roundabout please read

All proceeds from this year's Roundabout Charity Book Fair will help Bunina Primary School in  Zimbabwe to complete  building of their new classroom block.  24 DCB students visited the school in July 2017. Whilst there, they found a heartwarming desire to learn from the students, an incredible dedication from teachers who regularly go unpaid for a number of months each year, and a woeful lack of both facilities and space. It is wonderful to work together with the Beijing and Roundabout community to support  this cause!
