Friday 29 September 2017 Dulwich Newsletter ![]() ![]() From Headmaster Dear Parents,
Both Junior and Senior Schools held their Sports Days this week, and I would like to thank Mr. Parry, Mr. Hurworth and their teams for their hard work and organisation, well supported by Mr. Kraetzer. Regular exercise is so crucial for the wellbeing of our students and we were delighted to see so many participating. Well done to Alleyn as winning House in the Junior School and Soong in the Senior School! Most of our children participated in an event, and it was wonderful to see some amazing athletic skill and prowess on the track and field. ![]() ![]() Early Years music assemblies were a great success and we thank Ms. Lamb for these. There were many beautiful piano and violin pieces from our younger children and even an accordion number, plus a dance routine from one brave young man. Please see the Early Years newsletter for more details, including participants. Well done to all. This week also saw Senior School Student Council presentations and elections take place. It is good to see that student leadership is thriving - sixteen candidates put their names forward and spoke with courage in front of their peers. We say congratulations to all those who gained seats on the Council.
After the Cambridge International Examinations success, with a first place in China for one of our students, it was this week the turn of the other IGCSE examination board used by DCB, known as Edexcel, to publish their top awards. We are delighted to say that Dulwich College Beijing students (please see Senior School newsletter for full list of names) gained 'Highest Mark in China' for Chemistry, Economics, English Language, English Literature, French, Religious Studies, Art & Design, Drama, Psychology, and a remarkable 'Highest Mark in the World' for History. Well done to these students and their teachers for making us so proud. ![]() zhù dà jiā zhōng qiū jié kuài lè 祝大家中秋节快乐! ![]() Simon Herbert

* Monthly DCB's updates from the Headmaster, Simon Herbert From Sandrine:
I have been in Beijing for a year now, and my three children are at DCB - year 13 (yes, leaving next year!), year 6 and 4. I have a career in strategic marketing, and I have been running my own consultancy for almost 8 years now. But I love cooking, always have, and I had an old dream of writing a cookbook of the cuisine I like best! I have many generations of Mediterranean cooks before me in my family, and have learnt a lot through traveling, talking to chefs and taking cooking classes. .
I love the Mediterranean cuisine for many reasons, and one of them is that it is good for your health. So I asked a highly-qualified nutritionist, whom I met here in Beijing, to write nutritional comments in the book. I believe this is a key element which makes the book unique.
I wanted it to be: used often in the kitchen (the recipes work well, and they are quite easy), educational (with the nutritional comments), and inspirational (I have included many stories and pictures of beautiful landscapes from the region, all taken by myself or friends - this is an authentic book!).
I hope we can present it to Dulwich parents in the context of promoting family dinners and healthy eating! Yoga for Dulwich Parents! Dulwich Community Programmes (DCP) are inviting all DCB parents to join afternoon yoga classes! Beginners to yoga are welcome! Please see the details below. See you on the matt! Roundabout Charity Book Fair looking for Volunteers!
Roundabout will be back in DCB this October with their annual amazing Charity Book Fair. You can expect thousand of gently used, donated books for sale. Many languages and genres. Paperbacks and children's books from 10 RMB. Hardbacks from 20 RMB!
In preparations for this event, we are looking for parent and staff volunteers who can help with logistics. See the details below. Parents will be also able to help by supporting Friends Mobile Coffee or bringing homemade cakes for sale on Saturday. ![]() DCB will be hosting an annual Book Drive after the holidays to support Roundabout, so use the October break to browse through your own libraries and think about some book donations!
Roundabout is a social enterprise headed by volunteers. Started in 2008, they were the first charity store in mainland China. They now give support to 48 charitable organizations in the Beijing area and many more throughout China, Inner Mongolia and Mongolia. To learn more about Roundabout please read www.roundaboutchina.com
All proceeds from this year's Roundabout Charity Book Fair will help Bunina Primary School in Zimbabwe to complete building of their new classroom block. 24 DCB students visited the school in July 2017. Whilst there, they found a heartwarming desire to learn from the students, an incredible dedication from teachers who regularly go unpaid for a number of months each year, and a woeful lack of both facilities and space. It is wonderful to work together with the Beijing and Roundabout community to support this cause! Reminder: Notice of Withdrawal From Term 2 If your child will not be returning in Term 2 (8th Jan 2018 to 30th Mar 2018), please send written notification to the Admissions Department (Admissions@dulwich-beijing.cn) by Sunday 15th Oct 2017 in order to qualify for a refund.
