Friday 25 August 2017 Dulwich Newsletter

From Headmaster

Dear Parents,

School is well and truly up and running. Our Early Years council has reconvened, the Junior School's House Captain elections have taken place and the first of the Senior School House events, the Tug of War, has begun. Two surprise guests joined our Tug of War competition and provided a fun and thrilling start to this annual show of strength: DCI Chairman, Mr. Fraser White, and CEO, Mr. Christian Guertler, accepted our invitation to take part and thrilled the crowd with a stunning performance (particularly when Junior School students joined us)! They formed an almost invincible team with powerhouse Mr. Hawkins and…myself.

Our community always pulls together (please excuse the pun) and aside from the Tug of War, it is lovely to see that our Friends of Dulwich has a new committee. It was a pleasure to meet this group of volunteers, during their first meeting, and to thank them for all they plan to do to support the College. I am delighted to announce that two volunteers have offered to be co-Chairs of Friends, Ms. Claudia Kurz and Ms. Erie Hamilton. We wish them the very best for their tenure. I know that they join us in welcoming all new parents to our College. We hope that newcomers will feel involved and encouraged to attend events – it is sometimes harder for new parents than it is for their children, so we must all do what we can to be inclusive.

Our staff and their families enjoyed a summer BBQ last Saturday in the school grounds, complete with a bouncy castle. Our thanks go to Mr. Stratford and the Staff Social and Wellbeing Team for their organisation of this event.

The current Year 12 students deserve enormous praise for their magnificent IGCSE results, with 74.2% of grades being awarded A* or A. This reflects their commitment, hard work and collaboration, along with the talent and dedication of their teachers. This year's IGCSE and IB results are a credit to our students and to the College. I was asked many questions about our school during a recent 'all Chamber' event downtown and am sure our reputation is growing. Ms. Baran and Ms. Li also gave up their evening to promote the school and I thank them for this.

Today, the Newcomers' Fair took place, and over thirty parents attended this event in C&B. We value the smooth transition that many in our community help others to make when they arrive in Beijing, and this event provided useful information about medical care, pollution survival and even where to buy your groceries!

I wish you and your families a super weekend and hope you make the most of this beautiful Beijing weather.

Kind regards,

Simon Herbert
