Friday 18 August 2017 Dulwich Newsletter

From Headmaster

Dear Parents,

I am delighted to say the term has started so positively, with the usual DCB buzz, the largest number of students the College has seen at the start of the school year and tremendous IB results. Teachers have been working since August 7th and the new teachers since July 31st, but of course the arrival of the students is what really brings the school back to life. Our new and returning students have clearly enjoyed their holidays and are ready for the new term and all the excitement and challenges it will bring.

I must commend our new teachers, some of whom had very little holiday in between jobs. They have brought a real enthusiasm to their preparatory work and have thrown themselves into life here already. The 'Induction Week' for new staff was very well organised by John Astbury and Katy Cameron and I thank them and all other contributors for their work. Many current teachers and support staff have shown just how kind and welcoming the DCB community is. There was even time for a few social events too, and our new staff were invited to the Herberts' house for drinks and a BBQ.

It was a pleasure to welcome new families to Dulwich on Friday 11th August. Our Admissions and Marketing Department organised this occasion, which allows all new students and families the chance to have a tour of the College, meet key people and prepare more fully before the first official day back to school. I wish all our new students the best possible start and hope that you will make the most of the wonderful opportunity your parents have provided for you through choosing Dulwich College Beijing for your education.

I mentioned the International Baccalaureate success above and I offer my congratulations to the class of 2017 for their superb effort and the well-earned results. They managed an average score of 37.6 points, which compares to a world average of 30 points. This is our second highest score ever and reinforces the consistency achieved by DCB year on year. I commend Mr. Hawkins and his Senior School Leadership Team for guiding these students, Mr. Pankratz and Ms. Palmer for their pastoral leadership and all those who have ever taught the students, including our colleagues in Junior School and Early Years.

If you are able to visit the College soon, I hope that you will notice the remarkable amount of work that has been achieved by our Operations and Maintenance Teams over the summer, both inside the buildings and in the grounds of the College. Mr. Barton, our Director of Business Administration, Mr. Jiang, Head of Operations, and his team should be very pleased with the quality and quantity of the work achieved and we thank them for their commitment. Our SE21 (STEAM) zone will soon be complete and is looking magnificent already. Our Chairman, Mr. Fraser White, has given his full support to this project and we are excited to see it come to fruition.

As you know, we enjoy collaborating with other schools, and it was a pleasure for me to welcome the new Headmaster of the British School of Beijing, Mr. Richard Thornhill, to our campus this week. I look forward to continuing to strengthen our ties with BSB and wish Mr. Thornhill the very best at the start of his tenure.

Please note that 15th September is not a national or school holiday this year, despite what may have been printed in some diaries and planners that have been distributed. Secondly, may I ask from the very start of term that all parents wear lanyards at all times at DCB (around your neck, not carried in your hand or in your handbag). This is a matter of safeguarding our children and avoiding any unwanted visitors on our campus. Thank you for your co-operation.

Finally, I wish you all the best for the new school year and hope to see you at a forthcoming event, perhaps at Moonlight Madness on 1st September. I am very excited to be at the helm of our wonderful school, in this, my second year as Headmaster.

Kind regards,

Simon Herbert
